The mix of policy and research work, including the opportunity to publish in high quality journals, provides PhD economists with an excellent start to their career.

For those who want to develop their career at the Bank, thereĀ are a wide range of flexible career paths designed to suit individual strengths and preferences.

Some PhD economists prefer to remain engaged in policy-relevant research work for a substantial part of their career at the Bank. As their experience and recognition (both internal and external) grows, they can expect to be promoted to Senior Economist and Senior Advisor roles. These roles typically involve a significant degree of intellectual leadership, including shaping the research agenda at a divisional or area-wide level and leading and coaching junior colleagues in research projects.

Others prefer to broaden their experience and take up wider management responsibilities. Strong performers can expect to be promoted into management and senior management roles.

In developing their career profile, individuals are supported by both their line management and by a team of career advisors in Human Resources. A broad range of training opportunities are offered, including courses on (for example) communication and influencing skills, econometrics and programming.
