Welcome to the PhD Economists Recruitment section
The Bank

At the Bank of England, our PhD economists are offered a unique opportunity to contribute to real world policy making.

Home > Recruitment Homepage > Roles for PhD Economists > Who are we looking for

We are looking for PhD economists with the desire and ability to apply their strong economics or finance skills to live policy issues.

As both policy and research work at the Bank offers PhD economists a direct impact on policy outcomes, we are looking for candidates who are eager to take part in and influence the policy debate. Working in a policy environment means that there is a close interaction between policy makers and economists. We are looking for candidates who will thrive in this stimulating environment and can communicate their work effectively to peers, managers and policy makers.

In their first role, PhD economists will typically undertake a blend of research and policy work. Early on, PhD economists will contribute to the Bank's main policy forums: the monthly MPC briefing process; the quarterly forecast round; or the regular Financial Stability Board meetings.

New PhD economists will be encouraged to share their work with colleagues through a range of internal seminars and workshops. PhD economists also have the opportunity to publish their work in the Bank's publications: the Quarterly Bulletin; the FS Paper series and the Working Paper series.

PhD economists are encouraged to submit their research to academic journals and to attend relevant academic conferences and workshops. You can find out more about the blend of work undertaken by PhD economists at the Bank by looking at their personal profiles.
