How many employees are there?
The average number of staff during the 2006/07 financial year was 1,792. This includes staff at our Cash Centres in Essex and Leeds and our regional Agencies.
Are there any opportunities to use foreign languages or travel abroad?
We have a number of areas where foreign languages would be an advantage but are not required. We do have a small number of secondments abroad, however, they tend to be available for experienced economists/analysts who have been in the Bank for a few years.
Are there many opportunities for secondments to other organisations?
If you are proactive in pursuing these then there are a small number of opportunities available. At any one time there are around 20 Bank staff on secondment across a range of levels. Possible secondments exist to the European Central Bank, the Bank for International Settlement, the New York Federal Reserve Bank, the Financial Services Authority and the Washington Embassy amongst others.
Do I have to be a UK citizen to work at the Bank?
No, but you do need to be eligible to work in the UK. If you require a work permit, please see the question below.
I need a work permit. Can I apply to the Bank?
As well as advertising vacancies on our website, we also place adverts in the national media or on academic websites. In order to comply with the requirements of Work Permits UK, you must apply for one of these advertised positions if you need a work permit.
If you have significant academic and/or work experience and are the most suitable person for the role we will make a work permit application on your behalf.
We can secure Internship and Work Pemits for PhD interns, however please note that if you were an intern with us previously, we are unble to secure a work permit for a second placement. This is a recent change in the work permit legislation.
Can I undertake further study?
Yes. We encourage individuals to undertake further study once they are established. More information about other training opportunities can be found in the learning and development section.
